About Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and Grappling

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and Grappling are self-defence martial art and combat sports based on ground fighting and submission holds. These sports approach self-defense by taking an opponent to the ground, gaining a dominant position, and using multiple techniques ( joint locks, chokeholds, etc.) to force him into submission.

These sports are based around the concept from traditional Japanese Jiu-Jitsu, where a smaller weaker person can successfully defend himself against a bigger, stronger and heavier opponent. This by taking the fight to the ground and using leverage and weight distribution. Sparring, commonly referred to as “rolling” within the BJJ community, and live drilling plays a major role in training and the practitioner’s development. BJJ can also be used as a method of promoting physical fitness, body awareness and building character.
